Batman’s assumption of his duty to his community represents the American mindset of it duties to its own communities. This idea of putting community before anything is a worrying thought. Why does Batman do it? He does it to make sure order, justice, and understanding are number one in his community. Batman brings awareness to “Letter from Birmingham Jail” by Dr. Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s , “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” American spirit of having a duty to communities.
Dr. Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. thought it necessary to advance civil rights because of an unjust, racist society, just like Batman is trying to repair a broken, villain-filled Gotham City. Dr. MLK Jr. sees his duty to community as one of justice. …show more content…

Heidegger's curiosity exposed the thinking of his community and with this knowledge he tried to make his pathetic friends remember their place in the community. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment”, illuminates the American spirit of duty to each individual community. The old Dr. Heidegger, before giving the water to his pitiful friends, says to them, “Before you drink, my friends, you should draw up a few general rules as guidance before you pass a second time through the dangers of youth. You have had a lifetime of experience to direct you. Think what a shame it would be if the wisdom of your experiences did not act as a guide and teacher” (3). One his duties to community is making sure their heads are on straight before they go out and lose themselves. His experiment is a way he tries to please all in his own community. The narrator observes, “Assuredly there was an almost immediate improvement in the aspect of the party, not unlike what might've been produced by a glass of generous wine, together with the sudden glow cheerful sunshine brightening over all their visages at once” (5). He tries to make them feel better by replicating their good times, but instead brings an ugly monsters head up to the surface. Then his friends eventually leave and their pitiful outlook of life is saved from the community.
