THE BATTLE OF BLOODY RIDGE The Korean War became known as the forgotten war. Although it is a less mentioned war, the battles were anything but forgettable. One such battle was the Battle of Bloody Ridge. The battle was the beginning of another series of battles that would help the US (United States) and UN (United Nations) help seize momentum. Bloody Ridge, was a cluster of outposts built along the Taebeak Mountain. It was crucial for the US and UN forces to seize these outposts for the tactical advantage. At the time North Korean and Chinese forces had occupied the location. It served as an important observation post to track and fire upon US and UN forces. The Battle of Bloody Ridge occurred from 18 August 1951 to 5 September 1951. However, there was little US involvement until late August. They crawled and slid back down the hills, pushing forward, unwilling to accept defeat. Tactical Situation Throughout this campaign the ROK and 2nd ID experienced multiple victories and defeats. In the initial days of the battle ROK forces were able to take some of the objective hills. This lasted for only a day when they were counterattacked by the KPA and forced to retreat. It wasn’t until the 2nd ID arrived in late August, that they would start to see the swing of momentum. Regiments of the 2nd ID attacked multiple objectives simultaneously and experienced some success. However, sneak attacks at night caused the forces to retreat and regroup. They suffered a multitude of casualties and were replaced by less experienced Soldiers. Some of the casualties included officers, which in turn, caused a changes in command across the entire fighting force.
