he Battle of Stalingrad – July 17th 1942 – 2nd February 1943

'In February 1943 , the German Sixth Army surrendered and our newspaper carried out the pictures of the astonishing Russian victory . One particular wirephoto of captured Field Marshal Friedrich Von Paulus caught my attention . His face was deeply lined , his eyes spoke the nightmares he had witnessed . This once - proud German oficer was now a broken man.'(S1). This quote gives an insight into the sheer importance and affect this incredible , gut wrenching battle had on the soldiers and civilians over the 6 months of non - stop fighting through the harsh Russian winter with each soldier fighting to the death for every yard of territory and building that was available. The Russians hailed it a ‘contemporary cannae’ while the Germans themselves have their own name for it as they know it as ‘Rattenkrieg’ which translates to “Rat war”.Both were fitting in a sense as soldiers from both sides were dashing from building to building fighting to the last man for every inch of ground like rats as ordered by their leading dictators , Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler. This historic battle was the turning point of World War 2 in mainland Europe , this is said as The Battle of Stalingrad was Hitler and Nazi Germany first of two defeats in the war and this defeat proved to the allied powerhouse nations Great Britain , France , USA , and the Soviet Union that the Germans can be defeated.The Russians were determined to defend the city to the very very end as Stalingrad , now known as Volgograd , was not only the home of all the oil and oil plants which transported the incredibly important material throughout the length and breadth of this vast country but the name of the wanted city itself had more of a symbolic meaning as the city was named after the then beloved dictator , Josepth Stalin and he knew all too well just how important it was to keep hold of the oil rich city that was dedicated to him and he knew that it would be the ultimate embarrassment if the Nazis took hold of
