Two Battles that Changed History
The Battle of Stalingrad was a fierce battle in World War II in which Germany sent an assault against the Soviet Union. From August 23, 1942, to February 2, 1943, the two countries fought over control of the city and its resources. The Germans surrendered because of lack of supplies and a surprise counteroffensive from the Soviet army. The siege lasted 199 days and claimed almost two million lives, making it one of the bloodiest battles of the war. The Battle of Stalingrad, a very important event in WWII, is symbolized well by the Battle of the Windmill in Animal Farm as both invasions are unsuccessful.

Similar to the Battle of The Windmill, the Battle of Stalingrad broke out because Hitler attacked the Soviet Union for their resources. Then,“...the attack came...the animals sallied forth to meet [Frederick]...”, a comparable action that the Soviet Army also performed when the German invasion took place (Orwell 101). Frederick pushes the animals back into buildings, giving the men control of most of the farm. The humans destroy the animals’ windmill, a symbol of their hard work, which spurs the animals to fight harder. After that, much like Stalingrad after the Soviet army was forced to retreat, the farm “became the scene of some of the fiercest and most- concentrated fighting...” of the event (“Battle of Stalingrad” Encyclopædia Britannica). Soon the humans “saw that they were in danger of being surrounded”, a problem also possessed by the Germans after Operation Uranus was executed by the Soviets (Orwell 104).
