The Battle of the Alamo is to this day the most well-known battle in Texas' fight for its independence. While the battle only lasted 90 minutes, it was the conclusion of a 13-day siege by General Antonio López de Santa Anna's troops against the largely outnumbered Texans. Some of America's most respected legends, including Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett died during this battle. The Alamo was seen by many Texans as the key to beating the Mexican Army. The battle of the Alamo is a symbol of patriotic sacrifice and bravery when faced with unbeatable odds. The battle of the Alamo made the Alamo the symbol of Texas independence.

When Mexican ruler General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was in power, Texas was a part of Mexico. Santa Anna wanted Texas to listen to him. Texans did not like Santa Anna and the way he was ruling. They wanted their independents from Mexico. On September 29, 1835, some members of the Mexican army was sent to take a cannon from Gonzales Texas. The Texans did not give up the cannon, they fought. The Mexican troops rushed back to San Antonio leaving the cannon, with the Texans following them. The Texans forced them to surrender the Alamo and leave Texas. On March 6, 1836, General Santa Anna led the Mexican army numbering in the thousands to fight against a small group of Texans and recaptured the Alamo. Even though the Texans where greatly outnumbered, the about 200 Texans, who were commanded by James Bowie, William Travis, and Davy Crockett held out bravely for 13 days before the Mexican troops finally overpowered them. Between 1,000 and 1,600 Mexican soldiers died in this battle and most of the about 200 Texan defenders were killed. On April 21, 1836, General Sam Houston, led 800 men to victory taking Santa Anna's 1,600 men by surprise. They shouted, "Remember the Alamo!" when they attacked.
