Bay Leaves and Cinnamon Sticks is a novel written by Thelma B. Thompson that uses many themes to a prove a point of belief. Thompson used this selection to express an opinion she felt was important for an audience to understand. Author Thompson uses a focal point in the novel, believing that (not being real or faithful to something) can be in the spirits of a significant other that was seen as honesty. The selection (Bay Leaves and Cinnamon Sticks) has real and clear evidence of the author's husband (treating or using in a very mean, unfair way) her (quality of deserving trust because of honesty, etc.) for him. The husband in the novel took it upon himself to use his wife's hard earned money for his benefits. It is a huge sacrifice to leave a family behind to chase a dream that will be helpful to people outside of the one individual. The author was sure that her sacrifices would help her family reach a better (related to managing money) standpoint. In the novel, there was a stated/particular quote stating, "When the church said she should give on a tenth of her earnings to God, she had a talk with God." This quote was vital because she believed her money earnings were going to be given away for good thinking. She gave god (more than two, but not a lot of) excuses as to why providing an offering was not low-priced because she had to give so much money back to her family. (in the end), she would have been well off giving her cash to God rather than her husband because he was back home in Jamaica spending all of her
