In my hometown of Waterdown Ontario, there is rarely a minute when the main downtown area is not buzzing with people. In my opinion, the downtown area of Waterdown is alive and lively. Whether people are shopping in one of the variety of stores, grabbing a bite to eat at one of the numerous restaurants or cafés or just driving through, downtown is easily the focal point of town and continues to increase in chaos as Waterdown continues to grow and suburbanize. In Waterdown, the downtown core is where almost every shop and store is located. If you want to do anything from buy groceries to take a pottery class, you do so downtown.
There are many renowned individuals producing literature within the field of satire; among these individuals is the well-known Molly Ivins. Due to Ivins ' ability to use satire and irony throughout the discussion of serious topics, she has sustained a career as an author and political commentator and found great success along the way. In Ivins ' essay, “Is Texas America,” she ponders her objective to “explode the myths about Texas” during her journalist career (Ivins 782); Ivins refers to Texas as a massive and diverse state allowing for more variety among individuals and increased deviation from stereotypes. However, throughout her article she continues to place increased emphasis on the generalized stereotype of a white Republican male. Despite Ivan’s failure to efficiently analyze several topics she discusses, such as homophobia, racism, and Texas identification, there are sources that do agree with her stance and provide a more detailed explanation.

“The Atchafalaya” is an article by John McPhee, concerning the flow of the Mississippi River into the Atchafalaya region. McPhee interviews several people who have jobs related to the river and the maintenance of the Atchafalaya’s water flow. The location of the Mississippi River is crucial because if it moves, it could potentially destroy all of New Orleans and Baton Rouge, and, subsequently, their status as major shipping channels. Reading this article, I gained more insight on the importance of the river for the state of Louisiana and New Orleans. The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was of the most powerful natural disasters of the 1900’s in 11 states along the Mississippi River from Illinois to Louisiana. The flood lasted from the beginning of April, through May, June and July and finally ended in August. During the flood, the river got to be as wide as 80 miles in some places and submerged residential areas in as much as 30 feet of water. The flood affected multiple states and the country in countless ways. Some of the ways it changed the country was in a social and political way.

Throughout the years, Louisiana has experienced millions and millions of dollars in damages caused by hurricanes or flooding. The most recent flooding in August of 2016 sustained around $8.7 billion dollars in damages statewide (Dolce, 2016). These damages include residential homes, businesses, and roads.
