The English Paper So apparently, I suppose I am to write a paper about the comparison of a Baz Lurchmann film and a Woody Allen film both inspired by Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby. The book was written in 1925 with a theme of idealism and describes the jazz age as a cautionary tale regarding the American dream. On the surface, the book appears to be about the prevented love between a man and a woman but the main theme of the book is on a less romantic scale. Fitzgerald portrays the 1920s as decade of decayed social and moral values with an endless pursuit of happiness. The main character Gatsby gained a vast fortune in hopes of winning the affection of Daisy Buchanan but his mysterious past and her husband stands in the way of their relationship. …show more content…

Luhrmann’s adaptation. Elements used in his movie, The Great Gatsby, were setting, music, and effects, which made the movie an effective version of the book. The use of the setting portrayed a grand image much like the vivid images visualized while reading the book. Gatsby’s call to adventure involved him wanting to escape poverty, which was an opportunity Luhrmann saw to explore grand extravagant details that he put throughout the house. Nick carraway describes Mr. Gatsby’s house saying “The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard—it was a factual imitation of some Hôtel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden.” Lurhnmann used this description to bring Gatsby’s house to life in the film. Jay-Z was named executive producer of the film with the fact that jazz was underground at its time much like hip-hop as it started out. A story could be told for the people of today using modern hip-hop as a translator. Many know the climax of the book was when Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchannan got into a huge argument at which point the temperature and the color scheme changed as a way to flow with the new circumstances.
