Jack is desperate to show his dominance and power. Jack says, “Couldn’t let you do it on your own” (106) to Ralph when Ralph was trying to reach and get closer to the cave that the boys thought held the beastie. The cave is the one area that Jack was not able to explore while hunting due to its limited accessibility. As Ralph tries to reach the cave, Jack follows him. “Jack was edging along the edge.”

When things get difficult people get scared. They tend to give up and stop, letting fear control them. In the book Nightjohn, by Gary Paulsen, John is faced with many fears. Throughout the story, John is teaching a young slave girl named Sarny how to read and write. As slaves, learning to read and write is considered illegal, which makes learning dangerous.
Freak the Mighty “Your genetics load the gun. Your lifestyle pulls the trigger”, said by George A. Bray. This quote describes the situation of the main character Maxwell Kane; In Rodman Philbrick’s novel, Freak the Mighty, Maxwell’s story has an important message: the future one beholds is not necessarily determined by their genetics. The only thing that determines one's future is one’s self.
This quote shows Jack reassuring the boys that there is no beast and that they’re being consumed by the fear of something that doesn't even exist. This is an example of the boys' society being civilized at the start of the story by Jack having the common rationality to explain this to the others. Although Jack thinks this now, as he and many others descend into savagery their fear of the beast converts into the belief in its existence, “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!
Never giving up is one of the most important things a person must do in their life, and the book Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick contains this as it’s theme. This book follows the life of 2 young boys that have very troubling events over the course of the book, but despite all these events they stay strong, and never give up. We could all learn from these fictional yet very real characters and improve our lives by following their example. If you do this, then limits on you will be re sharpen and you too can accomplish amazing things just like these characters.
In the book the Lord of the Flies the masks that Jack’s group uses helps them overcome their fear of killing the pig by hiding their true feelings. When Jack volunteers himself as the leader of hunting he doesn’t realize that he would have to overcome new challenges. Masculinity “masks” and the clay masks they wear in the Lord of the Flies are basically just “things trying to look like something else” (Golding 63). Jack explains to his group of hunters that the masks they were going to wear are so they can look like something they are not or to hide what is keeping them from killing a pig. This shows that they are trying to push away their true selves and by looking like something else they can make a character of who they choose to be based on the reason they put the “mask” on.
Throughout history, many movements have exploited fear to expand their authority. Jack, being an opportunist after his defeat in the tribal election, kept circulating the rumor of a beast in order to grow his following: "I've got the conch. Ralph thinks you're cowards, running away from the boar and the beast. And that's not all… he's not a hunter. He'd never have got us meat.
He utilizes the mask when he says that “I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford…” (Fitzgerald ##). He wants everyone including Nick Carraway, the narrator, to know that he is a valuable and worthy person. However, it backfires when Nick Carraway says “I knew why

In the book Old School by Tobias Wolff there are examples of where Tobias is a not so innocent boy. He is often times a trouble-maker and very rowdy. However, there is a passage in the book the hints at otherwise. Deep down Tobias is more innocent than his antics lead on.
Jack’s personal identity transitions from a kid to a savage creature created by the hostile environment of the island. Face painting is the symbol of savagery for which Jack’s face painting shows the ruthless nature of Jack’s personality. Secondly, when Jack moves away from the tribe, Jack gives into his savage characteristics. In this scenario, Jack becomes obsessed with power and becomes a dictator for which he creates his own tribe. This represents the personality change in Jack to a savage and ruthless person.
He gradually calls a meeting as he sees that the littluns are being driven by fear. He precedes to ask if the beast was actually seen by any of the boys and if it is real like a true leader would. As the littluns talk, they are made fun of by Jack but Ralph still insists on learning what they are afraid of. He understands that if the beast is real he must be able to defend the group from it as he is the leader. Ralph remains to be fair and starts to say, “we’ll have a vote on them; on ghosts I mean; and then go to the shelters because we’re all tired” (90).
The small mask is a wood sculpture with pigment and were created around the late 19th to early 20th century. The masks were painted depicting anything from animals to human caricatures. The mask is symmetrical, “one of a kind”, and had lustrous curving surface that suggested clean healthy skin. Most of the masks represent an individual idealized by the Baule standards of beauty; a broad forehead, long nose, pronounced eye sockets, introspective, and peace. The portrait mask not only indicated beauty, but also refinement and desire to please others.
Jack brings up the topic about the beast at an assembly, and makes the little’uns fear the beastie even more. " Bollocks to the rules! We 're strong - we hunt! If there 's a beast, we 'll hunt it down! We 'll close in and beat and beat and beat-" (p.114) once again jack is sepaking of thr beast again, he is convincing the boys that there absolutely is a beast and that he can protect them by hunting it.
