The reconstructed European version of Beauty and the Beast by Joseph Jacobs is told of a traveling merchant who ask his three daughters what give they wanted him to bring back for them. Each ask for jewelry ,except for the last daughter asked for a rose. On the merchants way back home form his journey he gathers the necklace, and the gold chain, but forgets the rose. He spots a large garden and plucks the most beautiful rose from the garden only to be caught by the beast that owns the garden. They make a deal and the merchant must give up his youngest daughter to be the bride to the beast. After many days of living in the manner with the beast she grew fond of him. Then one day the beast didn’t appear at his usual time and she went searching for him. She found him lifeless under a rose bush and she wept for him until his fur split into two and out popped a handsome man. Who told her that he was under a curse from a magician. Much like this story the version form China is nearly the same. In Adele M. Fielde's version of the story the beast is a fairy serpent who catches the father picking flowers to be as patterns in his daughters embroidery.
