Death’s search for beauty in World War II surrounds the whole book. With the fighting among both sides of the war along with the Holocaust, Death is constantly at work while people continue to die. Death saw beauty in Leisel’s story on Himmel Street, but he also saw darkness in people along with the war and how it can tear families apart. Death saw beauty and ugliness in Hans, Rudy, and Leisel which helped him see some of the beauty that came from World War II. The beauty in Hans Hubermann is that he has a gentle soul and has courage to protect his family. She also fights for what she believes in, which can be dangerous at times. Sometimes she thinks thoughts about other people which can be rude or mean. However, Leisel is beautiful in many more ways than she is ugly. She is tough on the outside and vulnerable on the inside, which tells a lot about her character. She often acts tough around the people in her neighborhood, but always ends up looking to her Papa for guidance and comfort in the end. She is also very sincere and caring, but sometimes doesn’t show that until it’s too late such as with Rudy. Nevertheless, she is a very caring friend to both Max and Rudy, and cares about her foster family very much even though they aren’t her real family. Leisel struggles to understand words, but after reading Max’s The Word Shaker novel, she begins to understand more about Nazi Germany and the power of words. This fable shows how one person can have a big impact if they know how to use words. It also shows how words can be used for both good and evil purposes. Leisel makes her own story The Book Thief as well, and her knowledge of the power of words is shown when she writes, “I have loved the words and I have hated them, and I hope I have made them right”(528).
