“Once you find something you’re passionate about, you will enjoy it and it will come easy to you”. This was said by an instructor I listened to, and is how I feel about diesel mechanics. Becoming a diesel mechanic has been a dream of mine for a long time and after attending career day at NCC and going to the diesel technology class I now know what it will take to become a diesel mechanic. Career day influenced me to pursue a career in diesel mechanics because I enjoy the skills needed, enjoy the education needed, and like the career options. Before becoming a diesel mechanic there are some important skills you need to develop and perfect in order to become good at your job. Communication and writing skills are essential to any mechanic because first you need to communicate with the customer to find what is wrong with what you are fixing. Becoming a diesel mechanic has many job opportunities and can provide a stable job to support a family. Finding a job as a mechanic is relatively easy because mechanics are and will always be needed. Also a mechanic has the option of being self-employed and owning your own shop. Pay for a mechanic is based on how much experience you have and how good you are. So the more you put into your education the more money you receive in return. Starting out a diesel mechanic makes around $40,000 and your pay goes up with experience like any other job. After attending the diesel technology session at career day I know what to expect for education and years to come. This session helped me to better understand what I need to do to become a good mechanic. Becoming a diesel mechanic will have its advantages and disadvantages, but so will every job.
