Gladiators are an iconic symbol of the ancient Roman world. Becoming a gladiator was one of the easiest ways to burst to the forefront of the public eye, gaining fame and sometimes momentous amounts of money. Gladiators dressed in various amours, including bronze leg guards, shields, tridents, nets, and some even assimilated their local soldiers. Almost all gladiators wore heavy, blinding helmets. The helmets were bronze and would surely tire them very quickly. Although later in the Roman times Gladiators were free men, the earliest gladiators were slaves or prisoners who were forced to fight to the death at a notable aristocats funeral.
