Throughout high school you get to learn about many different career paths that are available to you. Those include options from working in construction, to being in law enforcement, or even getting the chance to work in the medical field. Despite being overwhelmed by the various career opportunities, I decided to pursue an education in music. More specifically, in becoming a music director/composer. This job includes so many ways to express your love for music and at the same time being able to lead a group through their own musical journey. In order to become a music teacher you first need to go to a college that has the classes necessary in order to help you succeed. Depending on the level you want to teach you will either need your “master’s degree” or a “bachelor's degree” (xello). It ultimately comes down to how much you want to learn and experience in order to be a great composer and director. Along with schooling it is also recommended that you get some real life hands-on experience as well. You can start by becoming an “apprentice” to someone who you look up to in this profession for “tips and styles” that you can use (onetonline.org). If you have lots of experience beforehand, it makes it a lot easier to get a job as a director. It helps to know how to use the right software in order to best help with your composing and ability to provide the resources needed to help your ensemble thrive. In the best interest to find out more about being a music director/composer I talked to my own high school wind symphony director, John Lack. He has been directing bands for over 15 years between Clovis West and Buchanan. I was able to find out so much more about his own personal experience with wanting to become a band director and how the journey has affected his life. He said that since his father was a band director, he had been involved in music from a young age. He didn’t want to stick with it by the time he got to the highschool level because of all the other choices he had. If it wasn’t for his parents saying he could not quit, he would not be where he is today. The thing he said that he enjoys the most about his job is being able to help students like me further their musical talent while getting to still explore and learn more about music. Getting to interview someone that I look up to really helped me decide if becoming a music director/composer is the right field of work for
