As a little girl, I always dreamed of being in a doctor or surgeon, but as a I grew older and realized the personal experience people receive from nurses and I knew that this would be the best occupation to begin my dream of becoming a Nurse Practitioner with a focus on Women’s Health. In achieving these larger goals, I knew I had to go to new places and experience new obstacles and meet new people considering I’m from an extremely small town. Fortunately, since having moved to Atlanta from that small town in South Georgia, I have been able to step my foot into a medical related environment, the Pharmacy. As a child who grew up mostly without a father figure and a strong mother, it has become very evident of the emotional tolls placed upon my reactions to various obstacles. Because of this, I have found deeper sentiment towards women of all ages, backgrounds, and monetary statuses. This ambition didn’t grow over time, but it was instant one night when I was listening to a song called, The Struggle, by Tenth Avenue North. The song rejoices in our freedom to struggle instead of our struggle to be free and this sparked a thought about those who are still struggling to be free of manipulation, of abuse, and even of rape. According to the World Health Organization, 18% of births in Latin America are to teenage mothers, and Amnesty International estimates that more than 50% of the pregnancies in the region are unplanned.
