I want to be able to make a difference, big or small, in any way possible. Ten years ago, my grandpa was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and was suspected to be dying from cancer. At first, he appeared okay, but he continuously declined and only had a few weeks left. When I was a child he always said “roll those beautiful brown eyes” and I always did. As his last days neared, those five short words were the last thing that he said to me. As I left his room crying, a nurse came up to me and told me that everything would be okay, that he knew that I loved him and that he was in a better place now. She probably didn’t know it then, but those few words made a huge impact on my life. The nurses helped my grandfather pass comfortably, helped me grieve, and ultimately allowed me to recognize that even the smallest action can be so life changing. The compassionate care that they gave my family was very comforting and inspiring for me to become a nurse and positively impact the lives of patients while supporting them and their families as they face difficult and emotional challenges. …show more content…
Through my experiences with my grandfather’s passing, I was able to help a friend grieve a loss of a loved one. As a nurse, I will empathize with my patients and show my commitment to building helping relationships. As demonstrated through my leadership and volunteer work with the American Red Cross, I am very responsible and have gained excellent organization skills and take pride in what I do. Finally, I was blessed to have been given the eye-opening opportunity to volunteer in Costa Rica at an orphanage, where I was able to positively impact the lives of children by being there for them at a time when they need it most, giving them encouragement. I hope to establish these trusting relationships with my patients and bring joy to patients through the milestones and
