One of the professions that interests me for my future career is becoming a pharmacist. Pharmacy is a sub-sector of healthcare. Pharmacists are licensed professionals that distribute both over-the-counter and prescription medications to patients. They would advise people in the safe use of prescriptions while providing information about the drug like its side effects, dosage, and where you would store it. They can also advise patients about general health topics, such as diet, exercise, and other issues such as what supplies would be best to treat a health problem. Pharmacists must also be licensed which requires passing two exams, the North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE). The NAPLEX tests one’s pharmacy skills and knowledge while the MPJE serves as the pharmacy law examination. For pharmacists who want to be certified in administering vaccinations and immunizations, they take the American Pharmacists Association Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery. One of the benefits about becoming a pharmacist is that their salary is $58.77 per hour, totaling up to around $122,230 per year, almost double the salary an average person makes. Pharmacy has always interested me because of its compounding medicine process. Being a pharmacist can teach you the many components of medicine like what type of substance can go into each specific prescription given out. Being a pharmacist to me means being able to help my family, friends, and the community around me in leading a better, healthier life style. Pharmacists can also work in a variety of different places like pharmacies, grocery stores, drug stores, hospitals, colleges, the government, and the military.
