Being as there are only 28 schools located in the United States that offer a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, the locations are spread out among regions. The closest school that offers this degree is located in Auburn, Alabama. Auburn University includes its own College of Veterinary Medicine. The courses required in order to obtain a DVM at Auburn University are the same as the courses at Mississippi State University. Being an out-of-state student, the annual fees for this university are estimated to be about $65,500.00. Veterinarians often work long hours including nights and weekends. Because they are on-call employees, they may have to respond to emergencies outside of scheduled work hours (Pen). The work veterinarians perform on a daily basis may be physically, mentally, and emotionally draining. To become a veterinarian, one needs to always have a compassionate mind and heart. Every day, a veterinarian has firsthand experiences when animals are sick and suffering. With every scared or agitated animal you receive, you are at risk of being injured by one (Veterinarians). Although it deeply pains a veterinarian, euthanizing an animal is also a task that must be done. When coming across sad or upset pet owners, one always needs to be prepared to pick the right words in a conversation. Unfortunately, this career field is also labeled as seasonal. This job is seasonal based on customer’s wages. When times are favorable, caretakers and owners are able to pay for treatments and medications. The funds to cover additional care become increasingly slim as the economy falls. Sadly, because owners often may not have money for the veterinarian, they choose to not take their animals in for a visit. The average veterinary student endures close to seven or eight years of college in order to obtain a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. During those years of college, a student must deal with the hardships of tuition, fees, tests, and clinical work. On an annual basis, the average veterinarian makes about $70,000.00. Having a career as a veterinarian will be worth every bump in the road as long as the true passion for the health and care for animals is present. Because animals cannot talk or inform us if they are in pain or sick, veterinarians serve as their voices. They help animals in a way that an average person could not. Veterinarians are put through so much on a daily basis, but they never seem to let anything or anyone hold them back. When picking veterinary medicine as a topic, I had hoped I chose the best topic. With little to no knowledge of this career, having a passion for animals was enough to learn every fact about how to help them. With the conclusion of my research paper, I believe that I would not have been as successful with any other topic. When entering college, I intend to achieve a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Having a strong mindset and a determination towards helping animals will help anyone through the long adventure of veterinary school. After learning every aspect of veterinary medicine, this was the job I was born to
