One of the themes presented by Sue Monk Kidd in, “The Secret Life of Bees” is pushing boundaries. In the book, Lily runs away from her abusive father and stays at a beekeepers house where she would be safe. This beekeepers house is a black family and while she stayed there and everyone was constantly pushing boundaries. The story relates to the article written by Nadra Kareem Nittle which was called, “How the Freedom Riders Movement Began”. This article was about a group of people called freedom riders traveling together to end the Jim Crow laws or other known as, racist laws.
August tells Lily that, “‘every bee has its role to play’” (Kidd 148). As August says, bees have their own social structure, with different types of bees doing various tasks, that allow the hive to function properly. If all of the bees are not doing their respective jobs, production can slow to a halt. All the people in the Boatwright household are similar to different types of bees.

Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air” (p. 40).
In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, bees are a recurring image in the story and epigraphs that provides guidance for Lily and symbolizes the important lessons she learns as well as her search for a mother. Throughout the book, Lily uses bees to guide her choices when she lacks a sense of direction. At the beginning of the novel, Lily is upset with her father and unsure what to do. She collects bees in a jar and decides to let them free, however when she unscrews the cap they do not escape though they easily can.

It's based in 1964 in South Carolina. A little girl named Lilly runs away from her abusive father to follow her mothers footsteps in order to discover her past. After escaping from her father, Lilly and Rosaleen(Lilly's nanny) came across a general store.
The novel The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd follows Lily, a white girl, after running away with Rosaleen, a black woman, to the Boatwright house. During the story, the insight that we should find love becomes increasingly obvious. To begin, we should find love because it builds resilience. Having the love of others helps in staying resolute during hardships. Toward the beginning of the book, Rosaleen tries to register to vote and ends up going to jail.
The theme of segregation is of significant importance in the novel the Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the films Selma by Ava DuVernay, The Help by Tate Taylor, and the documentary Crips and Bloods: Made in America by Stacey Peralta. I chose this theme as it plays an important role in all texts and greatly contributes to the main problems and situations in each. Although the Civil Rights Act supposedly ended all state and local laws requiring segregation the year before the film was set in 1964, there are still many cases of it seen in Selma, such as restaurants that solely serve white people or not allowing black people to vote. In Sue Monk Kidd’s novel, The Secret Life of Bees, Lily Owens is a fourteen-year-old girl living on the outskirts of Sylvan, South Carolina in 1964. Her mother is not in her life, as she has been accidentally shot by Lily when Lily was just four years old. She lives with her abusive father, T-Ray, who is still mourning the loss of his wife, Deborah, and his feelings and own issues carry over to how he treats Lily. He verbally and physically abuses her, shouting at her or making her kneel on grits until her knees swell up.
To be completely honest, I was hesitant to start this book due to its theme of racism and how as a black woman, it made me slightly uncomfortable to think of this topic by free will. Incidentally, I’m more than glad to have seen past that aspect because, in the end, I was able to read a timeless classic. The Secret Life of Bees brings delightful characters to life, by giving each their own memorable and lovable personality to bring to the table. My favourite character by far was August, the eldest of the trio of sisters. Her calm and gentle demeanor allows the people around her to open up, like how sunflowers bloom as soon as sunlight is in sight.
Atticus Finch's character I think is good because of the way he treats his kids, the way he reacts to violence and the way he refuses to treat anyone any different than the next person especially black people and during this time that is not something you would normally see. especially not a black man who was wrongly accused of rape like and ended up dying to cover a white woman's lie like tom robinson did. I think that in the book that is the number one thing that makes him different and have a good character even though everyone poked and spit at him for it he still defended tom robinson the best he could even though it was really a lost cause which is more than anyone else would have ever done for him. Such as when beekeeping started, the difference between hobbyist and commercial beekeepers. There are also different types of bees, different types of honey and different uses of honey. Most people are perfectly fine never encountering a bee or knowing anything about them.
“Beekeepers across the United States lost 44 percent of their honey bee colonies during the year spanning from April 2015 to April 2016” (“Nation’s Beekeepers lost 44 percent of bees in 2015-2016”). Many famers today plant their cops in sections farther apart depending on the plant. When the bees go to collect nectar they cannot get as much food without getting tired. This has had an effect on bees because they die faster from having to fly so far. Many beekeepers think that this reason causes bees to fade away.
Bees can provide a steady ecosystem that benefits both them and the peoples’ gardens and plants surrounding the bees’ pollination area. Maintaining bee gardens can also be a hassle and bees might become aggressive and harm people. Patricia E. Salkin states, “Bees can create a nuisance if they become aggressive or swarm on neighboring property.” The thing is, bees rarely hurt people. If they do, it is because they are being provoked or they feel threatened in some way.
