DESCRIPTION/SUMMARY Ludwig Van Beethoven, “one of the most respected and influential composers of all time.” (Classical Net, 2015) was a German composer born in Bonn, in 1770 into a family of musicians. Beethoven first performed in public when he was eight years old. At age 13, he was appointed cembalist in an orchestra and began to gain his first wage. At 17, he became a musician at the court. When in 1792 he played in Vienna, Mozart said “Pay attention to him: he will make a noise in the world some day or other.” In fact, a few years later he was popular all across Europe and considered the successor of Mozart who had just deceased (Cooper Barry, 2008). Suddenly he stated: "I am not very well satisfied with the work I have thus far done. From this day on I shall take a new way” (Beethoven, 1800). This was proved by the fact that from that day, he decided to focus only on composition and no longer on execution due to his deafness. In fact, in the following years he composed several masterpieces: the Tempest Sonata, his only opera (Fidelio), the 5th Piano Concerto Emperor and the 3rd Symphony Eroica, for Napoleon, which was innovative as it covers more drama and subjects over a broader orchestra and way longer than ordinary symphonies. The images of nature of the Pastoral symphony would later come to influence the works of later Romantic composers Berlioz and Liszt. In the last years he composed Missa solemnis, the Diabelli Variations and one of the most popular work of music ever, the Ninth Symphony (New York’s Classical Music Station, 2011) in which he added a choir for the first time ever.
