Throughout the book Behind Closed Doors, by B.A Paris, the author demonstrated fear, sacrifice, loss, loneliness, and freedom but the one that stood out the most was power. Many aspects throughout the book identify with power such as; Jack, Thailand, Jack’s appearance, fear, Millie, etc. The book is mainly based off power because it is what Jack craves and what Grace does not have enough of. Power is significant because it is what basically makes the book, but the author also shows small details that also contain plenty amount of power. If Jack did not have power, then he would never have had Grace captive and he would not have made decisions over every aspect of her life. Throughout the book Jack was the character that desired the most power. Everything he did and told Grace made her more vulnerable and he aspired to control and have power over every aspect of her life. He controlled what she wore, when she ate, who she spoke to, and when she could visit Millie. He likes to have control therefore, by controlling where Millie will eat gives him power over her without having to wait until she moves in with him. “‘Hotel, says Millie immediately. I know why she has chosen the hotel, just as I know why Jack is going to refuse. ‘Why don't we go to the restaurant by the lake?’ he says, as if she hadn’t spoken” (Paris 39). It is important for Jack to choose anything other than the hotel because he knows how much Millie enjoys going there.
