What does it take to become a paramedic? How are they affected mentally and physically by stress, and what different roles do they play? After much consideration I have chosen to research the process that it takes to become a paramedic. I have always been interested in emergency medicine, I became particularly interested in what a paramedic does after my sister’s foot was ran over. I remember them asking a lot of questions and moving quickly. What I remember the most was even though my mom and sister were scared, the paramedics were able to calm my mom’s nerves and treat my sister quickly. As a paramedic having the ability to stay calm in a stressful situation is important.
A few things that I already know about paramedics is that a paramedic starts out as an emergency medical technician (EMT) before advancing to the paramedic level through licensure, studying and training. Paramedics are trained and licensed to provide high level emergency care and transport patients to hospitals. Whenever you asses a patient you always check their ABC’s (airway, breathing, circulation). A healer is someone that supports another during illness. From the old English “Haelan” meaning to make whole, sound, or well. A paramedic, as a healer, supports the patient mentally, physically, and spiritually. The role of a healer is to show compassion. Compassion is an awareness of another’s suffering. In some cases, all it takes to help a patient is a paramedic concerned presence to help lighten the suffering. Just by being there and showing that you care, you are helping to support the patient. With an illness also can come pain. A paramedic is able to give many different kinds of relief, whether it be pharmaceutical pain management, or therapeutic touch.
