According to Psychology Today, solitude is the state of being alone without being lonely and it can lead to self awareness. Solitude and loneliness raise interesting questions that relate to our everyday lives. It is healthy? Are we ever alone? Is it a necessary part of life? People have many different perspectives on what is healthy and what is not healthy for humans not only mentally but also physically. No one can be for sure, but we can make our own conclusions. Though some argue that being alone is not a good thing, and that does more harm to people than it does good, it is proven that being alone improves focus and strengthens personal attachments. People argue that being unfocused is a side effect of loneliness. That being alone can make a person so stressed that they can't focus on the task in front of them. In Geri's Game, Geri at that point in time is alone and playing chess by himself in a park, he is so focused on the game that he ends up playing against himself. He, throughout the story, is thoroughly enjoying that he is playing by himself (Geri's Game). In the story we are able to confer that solitude can not only make us happy but helps us focus. Geri was so in his head and focused that he had forgot the world around him, and was able to focus on the task in front of him, which was playing chess. This explains how we don't have to be surrounded by people to get things done, and even better so if we do it alone. We don't have people speaking to us, phones ringing or anything to distract us. We are able to be at peace in the moment. Not only is it solitude portrayed in "Geri's Game" but also in a world famous book called "Frankenstein" by author Mary Shelley, who wrote," A human being in perfection ought to always preserve a calm and peaceful mind, and never to allow passion or a transitory desire to disturb his tranquility"(Shelley 56). Having a peaceful mind is a side effect of solitude, that is what Shelley is helping us interpret. With that peaceful mind we are able to focus on the task at hand and get things accomplished, and when we are in that state we have no desire to be disturbed or broken out of that trance.
