In the year of 1873, Susan B. Anthony had been arrested for casting an illegal vote at the last presidential election. This time period was known as the Women’s Rights Movement. Many women were beginning to acknowledge that they were treated unfairly by society’s standards against them, and had began to stand up for themselves and their fellow women. At this time, women were not allowed to vote. Most were stay-at-home mothers because men did not find them suitable for most jobs the men accommodated, and society discouraged them from even getting a real education.
Truth was not the main focus during her time and was not seen as important as the white women who was fighting for equality, but the contributions that she brought were some of the most revolutionary and key arguments used in the fight. Truth would think that what Hook’s is saying is not wrong. Truth doesn’t hate men, she just hates how they treat women, and Hooks mentions that in her book; she says how most feminists do not hate males, they do not like all the people that oppress them through sexism. Truth would probably agree with Hook’s idea of black women being the unsung hero of the feminist movement because Truth experienced the racial oppression and understood how hard it was for women to be heard, let alone black women. Truth would also understand Hook’s comment on status and that a wealthier more materialize women will not be as willing to fight the fight as the lower class women.

A famous saying is “a closed mouth doesn’t get fed” that represents how if a person does not put words onto their thoughts then they will never be heard. Diane Ackerman writes, “ ...although it is possible to have a thought without words, it’s rarely possible to know what one thinks without bronzing it with words.” Ackerman’s claims are valid, words need to be used in order to hear a person’s thoughts. Feminism is a political and social movement that is geared towards creating equality between males and females in various aspects of life (e.g work, education etc). Feminists throughout the world have different views on what they consider feminist goals based on the societies and cultures they live in.
Feminism is the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. Throughout history, many very influential women have contributed to the rise of the feminist movement and distinguished what it meant to be a feminist. It is very important to recognize that the goals of feminism have changed vastly over time. We see this in the documents written by Olympe de Gouges in France, 1791, who some recognize as the world’s first feminist, and bell hooks in the United States in 2000, who is known for her feminist theory focused on intersectionality. The goals of feminism have changed over time, which can be seen in Olympe de Gouges's Declaration of the Rights of Woman, and bell hook’s Sisterhood is Still Powerful.
Though the writing is essentially very solid with lots of evidence to match the claims, there is a lack of evidence for the claims about those she references as the “christian” masses who listen and control media, not stating clearly what being “christian” entails. A second weakness is the author's personal experience which could be interpreted as biased. The author, being a black woman in the world, has a much different experience in patriarchal society than a white woman. This perceived bias could be interpreted incorrectly and misconstrued as the negative forms of feminism Hooks’ is trying to veer away from. However, I believe that the basis of the author’s own experience is evidence to the claims she makes.

The feminist movement is mostly focused in the 60s and 70s, a time when women only made up 3% of America’s lawyers, 6% of America’s doctors, and less than 1% of American engineers; women would mostly work as secretaries, nurses and teachers. The feminist movement started after the publication of Betty Friedan’s, The Feminine Mystique, it was focused on workplace equality such as equal payment and access to better jobs. The Civil Rights Act was the first law that stated that it was illegal to discriminate anyone based on sex in a workplace. That, of course, had little effect and Betty Friedan (together with other feminists) established the National Organization for Women (NOW), destined for the protection of women in the workplace. The NOW assisted women on finding legal assistance to help them battle workplace discrimination in court and lobbied in Congress in favor of pro-equality laws.
She was arguing that feminism should be a political commitment, a subversive movement to end all the sexist oppression, she thinks that it shouldn’t be about all the achieving social equality with men, or the new lifestyles or identity. Hooks strong believes that feminism should start to change the society and claim a cultural basis of group oppression. In fact, she thinks that there is no oppression that is privileged like race, sex and all the class oppression are interrelated except sexist oppression which is what most of people experience in their life. As a matter of fact, hooks also stresses the importance for women to know the real meaning of feminism so they could all help each other. In her argument she pointed out a few good collective of feminism in opposed to the privileging individual group of women.
In the introduction “Come Closer to Feminism” Hooks describes the conversations she tends to have with people who are interested in what she does. The misconception that feminism is hatred towards men by women is one that is constant according to her. As she explains most men and even women have the idea that feminist hate men, that they are all lesbians and they take jobs away from white men to make their lives harder, but when asked what they have read or know of feminism most will answer saying that they have never read a book. Their ideas of theories have arrived from that of what others say or mention. Before reading Bell Hooks “Feminism is for Everybody” I did not understand what feminism truly meant, I had the definition that I had seen online of feminist women being what they called "feminazi".
Misinterpretation on feminism becomes an issue in America because the definition altered in various communities. In the essay, “Feminist Politics: Where We Stand”, the author Bell Hooks discusses the misconception of feminism in the United States. Bell Hooks states that the reason of the misconception of feminism occurs because of the patriarchy of America because mass media represents feminism as an anti-male group. However, feminism is the exact opposite of an anti male groups. Feminism defines itself for equality between men and women.
