In the novel Belle, by Beverly Jenkins, it’s very interesting because it gives the readers the first point view of a sixteen year old girl who escaped slavery in Kentucky and travels to Michigan on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. Belle Palmer is the name of the main character of the story, and her story is how she is trying to find her missing father while trying to figure out her feeling for the handsome and intelligent Daniel Best, who is engaged but isn’t sure if he’s in love his betrothed or not. In my opinion this book is good, but it’s lacking the the development of a teen romance and how they feel towards each other, while dodging the obstacle of Daniel’s parents as well as his cheating betrothed finding out. Belle is considered to sweet, kind-hearted to everyone she meets except for Francine, who is nothing but rude to her, by calling her a “illiterate, cotton-pickin’ slave girl.” But those snide remarks won’t stop Belle from achieving her goals in life. The theme works well for Belle, because in the book Francine sees Belle as a girl who is illiterate, and who doesn't know when to give in. Which is false, Belle shows everyone in the book that she’s capable of doing her best, and making her dream to make dresses and become a seamstress. The theme for this novel is very powerful, millions of people are told to give up when they try to conquer their dreams, and some do give in, but not Belle. Every since she was enslaved, Belle wanted nothing more than to become a seamstress, and now thanks to the Best family and countless teachings from Daniel, her dream has come true; Belle is now able to create beautiful dresses and have women wear them at balls and even weddings.
