Jacey Burley Mrs. Wade DE English 111-01 30 August 2016 Summer Reading Beloved, written by Toni Morrison was about a slave and her life when she was a slave, how she was freed, and how she is living her present life. Her name is Sethe. Sethe’s past was her being a slave at Sweet Homes, run by Mr. and Mrs. Garner in Kentucky. At Sweet Home, she met Halle. Halle was Sethe’s “Husband.” Halle and Sethe had four children together. The firstborn, who was murdered as a toddler, two sons, Howard and Bulgar, and Denver. Halle spent many hours working on the plantation, and freed his mother from slavery. Sethe, Paul D, and Denver help the woman inside. The only thing the woman could remember was that her name was Beloved. Beloved slept for days. Paul D felt very uneasy about her presence, accusing that she did not seem as ill as Beloved claimed. However, Beloved had this connection with Sethe. Sethe would always tell Beloved stories of her past. Later, Beloved also connected with Denver. Denver asked Beloved how she got her name. Beloved explained she was curled up next to a bunch of people, dead and alive, in the dark. Paul D felt very uncomfortable around Beloved so he always tried avoiding her. One night, Paul D was in his cold house and Beloved approached Paul D, demanding sexual encounter. While Paul D and Beloved make love, he kept chanting, “Red Heart.” Paul D described his heart as a tobacco tin, meaning strong and powerful. By his actions with Beloved, this could be the loosing of that lid and letting go of himself and what he has said. Denver develops this love and compassion for Beloved. Denver explains, “BELOVED is my sister. I swallowed her blood right along with my mother's milk” (116). However, Beloved looks at Sethe as a mother figure and because Sethe is so wrapped up on Paul D, Beloved feels unwanted as sees Denver as a fulfilling mother figure. For Paul D to restrain away from what he and Beloved had done, he told Sethe that he wants to have a baby with her. Sethe, being shocked and overwhelmed explained that she has had too many dreadful events happen to her to have another
