When Jess tells that she wasn’t with any boy but with her friend no one bleived her. Her father then asks her to swear on baba g who is a relegious character in Indian hindu culture. She swears on baba g and ever one believed her. We can see from the scene that her mothers says “ these english girls with short hair” it means when Jess confronted baba g and swared on his name her family members did trust her that she was not with any boy but with short hair girl friend of her. From this scene we can say baba g is a strong character who the family gives devotion. Even though Jess being a second generation linguistically and culturally much closer to the British still accepts the ritual beliefs of her family. More over, it can be analyzed that Jess is trying to adapt to religion by keeping all other values to a modern approach and she is in contact with original homeland and traditions of her parents
