Gurinder Chadha, the director of Bend It Like Beckham and Bride And Prejudice, portrays similar ideas in both films. Both of these films portray the culture clash between the Indian culture and British culture. The second way is through the idea of gender expectations and how the children are told what they should do by either of their parents.

Gurinder Chadha often shows the vibrant Indian culture clashing with the more simple British culture. In the film Bride And Prejudice, the contrast between these two cultures is clearly told at the start of the film when Mr. Darcy dress’ up in a white dress. In British culture wearing white is normal as it mostly represents happiness and fortune. This is the same in Indian culture, but it can also symbolize the pallor of death. This significant difference in culture made Mr. Darcy look awkward in the crowd of Indians as he was the only one wearing white. In Bend It Like Beckham, the difference between these two cultures is also noticeable when Jesminder is getting dressed by her teammates, as they do not know how to dress her properly. This is shown in Bride And Prejudice when Lalita's mother, Mrs, Bakshi sets the expectation for her daughters. Some of these expectations including smile, don’t talk unnecessarily and don’t say anything too intelligent. The last words “and don’t say anything too intelligent” shows how if she said anything smart the man wouldn’t like her as she could be seen as annoying and too talkative. This is similar to the scene in Bend It Like Beckham when Jules’ mother yells at her and her father, “no boys want to go out with a girl with bigger muscles than him”. Both these phrases show how girls are expected to be weaker and not as intelligent as boys. This is pointing out a problem in our society as sexism is a problem, as there is always a stereotype that says boys are stronger and smarter than
