Theatre is the heart and soul of one of the best cities in the world, London. I think theatre plays a huge role in the culture of this city for it has been around for many centuries dating back to the Renaissance period. Theatre helps us to understand more about our history and previous famous playwrights such as Shakespeare. Part of what makes London theatre so unique is because it has the Globe Theatre that has been around for 400 years. This was the exact theatre that Shakespeare performed his plays at in 1599. I believe London would not have the same spark as it does if theatre were no longer around because it provides a different source of entertainment that some cities or even countries do not offer. It helped me to understand people from other cultures than my own. By watching their performance traditions and different use of language I began to take a look into the perspective of an Indian family. It is completely different than what I come from, which fascinates us as humans. Even the social aspects were so unique in the way the family members speak to one another and what is expected of them at such a young age. For example Jess is expected to marry an Indian boy relatively young. Sometimes the parents plan these marriages out. Jess ends up with her Scottish soccer coach, which completely went against the norms of her culture. Jess starts to globalize her family into new cultures by playing soccer, which is not seen from women of their culture and by branching out and falling in love with someone of a different ethnicity. The beautiful Bollywood wedding showed how important tradition is to Jess’ family. In Jess’ family showing too much skin was a sign of disrespect. In Jules’ family showing skin was not seen as disrespectful. It was interesting to see how much these two families differed but the two young girls got along so well. The Indian cuisine and traditions put on before a wedding are all unique to the Indian culture. I think it is amazing that theatre gives us the opportunity to share our cultures with one another and take a brief look into someone else’s life for a few
