Bend it like Bekham is a movie about a girl named Jesminder who is from a strict indian family. She enjoys playing soccer with her friends. However, when she was given the opportunity to play for a semi-pro soccer team, Jess debated which side should she chose: her future or her parents. Unfortunatly, it seems as though her future is already decided by her parent. One of which being her father. Jesminder's father, Mr. Bhamra gets in the way of the protagonist's goals. He was conflicted on whether he should be the supportive parent or keep his daughter safe from the same fate as he faced with cricket. When Jesminder's father was about her age, he deeply enjoyed cricket. Howver, his hopes and dreams were crushed when he was rejected by sporting teams. Mr. Bhamra concluded that he was discriminated against due to his race and skin color. His fixed view on society is grealty impacting those around them, especially Jess. In hopes to mend their broken relationship, her father goes to one of her games after she failed to remain at home.During this scene at the bleachers, Mr.Bhamra seemed to be proud of his daughter. This exepmlifies that he wants to support her choices. However, when Jesminder failed to follow the rules of soccer and was flagged for violence, her father's smile disapeared. Her father's conflict comes from his own dicisions being effected by Jess's mother's. Mrs.Bhamra does not allow Jess to play soccer because it goes against their customs. She fears that they may receive a bad reputation if her daughter continues to make a fool out of them. The idea of the perfect indian daughter does not seem to matter to Jess, but her mother does not appreciate her lack of customs.
