Furthermore, Police Officers are held to higher standards than others employed in public service because they alone have the power to limit individual freedom. Another effort to increase legitimacy with the citizens of Dallas is the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics and the Canons of Police Ethics that provides officers with a philosophical en ethical basis for the Dallas Police Department rules and regulations. The provisions of the Code of Conduct shall be observed by all members of the Department in order to maintain the confidence, respect, and support of the public. Police Legitimacy reflects on how the public perceives officers and what they can do to improve or erode those perceptions. In the city of Dallas, there is about one patrol officer for every thousand citizens, as a result, the impact that every single Dallas Police Officers makes on the citizens that we served represent the Police Department in general.
An officer is working for the public helping to protect and to help keep everyone safe from danger. The public does not work as an officer because they are not trained or are aware of how the job works. When misusing your power this takes an effect on the public and how they will function around the police. You want the public to feel welcome and that they feel safe knowing that there is an officer around. Police that are leaving horrible impressions on the public is what ruins the relationship between the people and officers.
1. How does procedural law (the rules by which police must interact with citizens) play a role in keeping police officers ethically sound? According to the book “procedural law is a very important part of the criminal justice process because it specifies how people accused of crimes will be treated.” This law ensures and prevent officers from trying to falsify information on their reports and to make sure all information on the report is accurate as to how it did really happen during the crime or incident.
Discretion is the power of officials to choose among multiple possible courses of action; whether or not to give someone a speeding ticket, or give them a warning. Discretion is vital to the police. It is impossible for the police to arrest ever individual who commits a crime; instead, the police rely on their ability to use discretion: handing out tickets, warnings, etc. Discretion is important, but there are situations in which the administration has to limit the officers use of discretion. East Valley’s police department will implement policies that will require officers to make an arrest in certain situations.
Discretion is necessary because it helps officer with their own opinions and being fair/unfair to certain situations. For example there are two cars and the street light is about to change. One car decided to run the yellow light he or she had enough time to get across but for the other car he or she did not have enough time to get across but still decided to run that red light guess who got the ticket the person who went through the yellow light. Another example is when a person is driving over the speeding limit and having the phone to his or her ear. The officer can pull the driver over and give the driver two tickets one for speeding and one for having the phone to the ear.
These jobs aren't for everyone, but the question I need to answer is are they for me? Becoming a sheriff or state trooper are two career choices I am considering; however, being a state trooper is a better fit for me because of the better benefits and different atmosphere. The protection of the good citizens all around the United States is a priority to some men and
Law enforcement is an honorable job to have and to uphold, especially a State Trooper. You will have a reputation to uphold. In this field it will come to know that it is very unpredictable. Every morning when you go into the field, there is always a chance you won't come home.
Also all the officers are constantly trained to make sure they know the efficient techniques of preventing criminal activity. The law enforcement agents are regularly checked to ensure that they serve the government loyally and with respect. Secondly, every person working in a law enforcement agency knows their responsibilities. Any police department
Police is not 100% perfect in the world. There are flaws and errors which are committed by the member of each police agency. No police agency pure to its mission. For example a lot of police forces use the word “Integrity, Respect and Safety” these are some of the words which are used by police forces across the country. To be honest not every single member follows this idea.
Even when no one is watching Police officers must be exemplary citizens. In the line of duty, police will be faced with several decisions requiring them to use their discretion. For example, a police officer is responding to a call of a house with the front door wide open. As he and his partner walk around to unsure everything is okay, he notices money sitting on the counter. With integrity, this police officer decides to leave the money as found and notify the home owner.

When it comes to low-crime, stable neighborhoods, and stable apartments, they usually experience little to no crime at all. Whether a neighborhood is high or low -income the same approach is taken and is generally employed by a police agency. Residents like to know that police are patrolling the area. Neighborhood watch programs would be helpful, but there is not any proof that that actually help or prevent crimes in the neighborhoods (San Miguel, 2005). Police responsiveness to stable complexes, drive-by visibility is usually almost not viable because some communities are gated areas and parking lots are almost impossible sometimes to just drive through.
Due to the nature of their job, police officers are first responders to crises. They see things that normal people are not meant to see. People depend on officers to help them through some of the worst moments of their lives. Officers do not need a degree in counseling or a license to offer support to people going through a crisis or a traumatic incident. The most important tips for police officers is to 1) stop and ask yourself "how would I feel if this were happening to me?", 2) Communicate empathy, and 3) ask the person "what are you going to do if we cannot help you?".
Great job! I enjoyed reading your post; it was well thought out and articulated. Furthermore, I believe your post offer keen insights into police discretion and police brutality, as shown in Michelle Jordan’s case; and to an extent, I agree with most of what you stated regarding the circumstances of the use of force on Jordan. To begin with, it is important to note that the penalty for texting and driving usually consists of just monetary fines—in a few states, criminal misdemeanor charges. Jordan’s crime was only a minor violation and therefore did not warrant such excessive force from the officer.
