Yes, I believe Ms. Fortin was a victim of union animus because her employer were not big supporter of unions. Few months prior to her dismissal, Ms. Fortin appeared on a union flyer; consequently, the relationship between Ms. Fortin and her employer were not the same. In addition, Ms. Fortin attended a hearing concerning unions representing her workplace. When she returned to work that day, her boss called her into the office and gave her a disciplinary warning. Furthermore, two days later Ms. Fortin received four additional disciplinary actions.
They have set rules and regulations for workers so that they can be safe while doing their jobs and are forcing employers to raise wages. The early unions obtained the eight hour work day and the foundation for the Workers Compensation Acts, but the unions today have built on that foundation and raised the standards, so that the working men and women can give their families a roof over their heads and food on the table. Labor unions fight for the rights of workers. Today, they are trying to keep jobs in America and get the companies to let union workers to do the jobs needed instead of hired contractors. Many people today would agree with Mother Jones when she said “As I long to see the day when Labor will have the destiny of the nation in her own hands and she will stand as a united force and show the world what the workers can do.”

Many people today will choose to pursue a career that offers this type of advantage because it allows an employee to feel safe. I agree with you Hannah. I think that unionization and therefore, collective bargaining definitely benefits nursing and more importantly the patients. One advantage that as a nurse I find beneficial is the fact that nurses who are apart of a union tend to have higher wages (Sojourner, Frandsen, Town, Grabowski, & Chen, 2015). This attracts more nurses and helps with the nursing shortage in organizations who have unionized nursing contracts. Not to mention they tend to stay at the organization longer.
Labor union is the organization of workers who come together to achieve common goals. Unions came into picture in 18th century due to the imbalance in the rights of workers in regards to owners. Knights of Labor were the earliest large scale union in United States organized in 1869. They sought equal work for equal pay including blacks and women. This union peaked in 1880s but was soon replaced by American Federation of Labor.
The way that the Union has affected my life is by giving my father improved and safe working conditions, improving the hours they work, and giving them higher wages than non-union workers. With my dad being a part of the Union he is able to provide our family with our health insurance that is needed for our family. They also give my dad a safe place to go to work so he can come home to us after work every night. One other thing that helps me and affects me is the wages he gets from the Union without these wages we would not be able to survive or function in society. This is the most important thing that I am most thankful for the Union is that they give my father the wages that are needed to provide for our family.
Collective Bargaining also had benefits for workers that were part of the union such as; raised wages for low-wage workers, left middle-wage workers, and higher-wage workers the same to close wage gaps.
