When I first began watching this film, my initial thought was that it was an old movie and that I might need an extra coffee to keep me awake through it. However, as the film progressed I came to realize that not only did I not need that extra coffee, but also Bang the Drum Slowly is a movie that looks deeper into what I thought would be a superficial baseball story; it made me laugh, cry, and even sad to see it end. Through aspects of death, teamwork, friendship, commitment, and perseverance, the film portrays themes that are universal and timeless. The first scene in the film introduces the audience to Bruce Pearson, the main character, who is dying from a serious disease.
A series of events leads him to cross paths with the famed but forgotten filmmaker George Melies. A number of characters in this film are trapped by their pasts including the characters of Hugo and Melies. Much like Sunset Boulevard the imagery of the main setting is representative of the characters being left behind as the world moves forward without them. The majority of the film takes place within a train station which serves as both a home to Hugo and contains the toyshop Melies owns. Day after day the film’s protagonists remain within the walls of the train station, a place that is by definition meant to transport people.

Banneker's purpose is to argue and persuade against slavery and explain how it's unjustified at a time after the American Revolution and during a time when the House of Burgesses took away African's rights and made them forever bound to slavery brought by the slave codes. He adopts a serene tone in order to calmly and professionally expound on the ideas that he's going to explain to show why slavery is unjustified in his letter to a man of higher authority. Banneker achieves his purpose/tone through the use of diction and figurative language.

These binoculars act his sight as Jeff is confined to a wheelchair due to breaking his leg from an accident. As he is unable to go out and about due to his broken leg he spends most of his days sitting down looking out of his window. Through the window he views an unhappy married couple, a musician, a lonely dancer, and a man named Thhorwald which will soon bee seen as the murderer. Frank is introduced as the stereotypical Asian stereotype, a workhorse slave to studying that got into Harvard and achieved perfect test scores. However, when you learn more about his home life, the clear abuses and pressure that his mother put on him make his seemingly immaculate overachiever life much darker. His mother is implied to be fueled by her Korean heritage, which promotes an intense and arduous school experience on students. AP Frank acquired his nickname due to his heavy AP course load, which his mom forced him to do despite his wishes to do sports or extracurricular activities. A significant use of symbolism occurs on page 41, when a white sheet that was made for Mr.Whitman saying “AP FRANK” is washed by Frank’s mother.
I still have the image of Emmet Uncle’s scared eyes when he was testifying at court. He was afraid that he could become a victim of blindness and revenge, just like his cousin did. The film starts out with an African American man walking in the suburbs. He sees a car and is frightened. A person in a hood strangles him from behind and kidnaps him. This illustrates the fear African Americans have in a white society. The movie then fasts forwards to New York City and turns the focus on Chris who is a successful young photographer.

When I was watching the movie, I noted how Andie portrayed the typical needy, emotional, and clingy girlfriend. She is representing what a normal girlfriend is expected to be. Another idea that I found interesting was when Andie was at the basketball game and she played clueless and uninterested in the game, when in reality she enjoyed watching basketball games. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Benjamin had claimed to his coworkers that he could get any woman to fall in love with him in 10 days. Therefore, Benjamin was being the opposite of how men usually act.
