Deviance in Benny and Joon Deviance is a term that can be defined in many ways and can also be seeing in either a good or bad way. It is a way of leaving the usual standards of society, also leaving the norms that one has. Deviance can be what is socially acceptable and what can be socially unacceptable. It is how society sees others that do not follow the same rules as others, of what is to be expected of one. The film Benny and Joon shows different types of deviance with three of the main characters who are Benny, Joon, and Sam. Benny is Joon’s older brother and Sam is one of the characters cousin (Mike) who goes live with Benny and Joon due to a poker game Joon lost against Mike. Medicalization of deviance is when medical conditions change the morals and legal deviance of society and they change to be reference as clinical diagnoses. Joon can be define as a person with medicalization of deviance because when her parents had a car accident she became medically ill and since then was labeled as someone with a mental illness. Joon what probably needed the most was therapies to help her coop with her traumatic situation. Also her behaviors during the film were of a girl with attitude and was sometimes not polite to others and she also was a little rebellion on some things. Benny rather than labeling her as something bad or as of a behavior of a mean girl, he instead understood her and let her have her mood changing behaviors. He was very patient with her, but it is because of the reason that she is mentally ill. Joon had an illness where she needed help with and even though her behavior was not great at some point she was not punished for that. For example when she went outside her house even when her brother told her not to, she made a chaotic situation with a lot of cars in the street, because she was not leading none of them pass she made a big traffic situation. The police officers had to go and see what was going on and she responded to them with understandable words, the police officers just asked her for an I.D. and she showed them her medical I.D. card. Which eventually said she had a mental illness, so Joon did not get punish for this
