The Christ Like Figure of Beowulf Many of the things people see when thinking about Jesus is how he died on the cross for the people sins. There are various stories that depict this same image in all different sorts of ways that many people can relate to Jesus’ story. However there is one specific story that is relatable to the life of Christ in great numbers of examples and parallel symbols. It is unknown if the author did this intentionally or if he wanted to illustrate this story differently. The book “Beowulf”, whose author is still unknown, is a classic in literature. God’s protection over Beowulf shows this when he relates his battle with Grendel's mother when he proclaims to himself that if God was not with him the fight would've ended really badly and even more towards the end of his life “The fight would have ended straightaway if God had not guarded me”. Throughout the book there is a strange sense of protection that goes with Beowulf which is unexplainable that permeates his actions to be memorable and great “He has guided the man without friends”. For example, when hes about to fight Grendel’s mother in the cave Beowulf sees a great sword, But he does not take credit for this recognition. The recognition is given to God: “But the Wielder of Men granted me that I should see the hanging on the wall a fair, ancient great-sword”. And later in the passage, Hrothgar tells Beowulf that even the status of king is achieved through the grace of God. When he tells the story of a King named Heremod who was corrupted through pride and selfishness, Hrothgar tells Beowulf “he turned away from the joys of men, alone, notorious king, although mighty God has raised him in power, in the of strength, had set him up over all men”.
