Can kindness, selflessness, and bravery defeat evil? Beowulf: A New Telling, is a fictional novel written by Robert Nye. The book Beowulf is about a young man who comes from a different land to help save the town from the evil of Grendel. Beowulf's saving of the innocent people from the monsters made him a hero in many ways. Beowulf’s way of thinking, and bravery going into battle, helped him defeat Grendel and become a hero. When Grendel entered, instead of Beowulf attacking, he put “Ten strong fingers locked about his hairy wrist” (Nye 40). When Beowulf was fighting Grendel, he talked to him and dug his fingers into his skin, putting his goodness into Grendel's darkness. Beowulf’s thinking helped him win because if he tried to have a physical battle with swords and other weapons, he would have most likely failed, so with his bravery, he won. …show more content…

Unferth was waiting for Grendel to come with Beowulf.. Beowulf was sitting still, staying calm, and not moving a muscle. Beowulf sitting still shows his bravery because instead of peeing his pants like Unferth, he was calm and collected, which helped him win the battle. Beowulf was a good soul and because of that, he had many other components to his goodness. Beowulf's goodness helped him overcome evil in many scenarios, making him the hero he is. While Beowulf was battling Grendel, he said “”Light holds you, Grendel. Light has you in its power”” (Nye 40). Beowulf was trying to kill Grendel, so he used his goodness to help him succeed.
