Everyone has an opinion on what makes a perfect hero. In literature, a great example of a hero is Beowulf. In this epic, the hero returns to his home willing to risk his life to defend his people from the monster Grendel. Beowulf was known for his great strength and courage. In my opinion, heroes risk their lives to help others. However, a hero does not have to be a fierce warrior or wear armor. Beowulf was a mighty hero and warrior, but today's heroes are ordinary people who risk their lives to help and defend others. In the epic tale Beowulf, the character Beowulf is considered the perfect hero. He left his home, the land of the Geats, to go to the lands of Danes. He intends to defeat an ogre named Grendel. After his victory, Beowulf returns to Herot and is honored by King Hrothgar. The story states “Then the Geats’ brave prince entered Herot, covered with glory for the daring battles he had fought; he sought Hrothgar to salute him and show Grendel’s head” (lines 615-617). Eventually Beowulf becomes king of Geatland. Fifty years later another monster threatens his kingdom. Again, Beowulf, even in his old age, stands up with his men to fight and protect his kingdom from a great dragon. Although he dies in this battle, Beowulf’s courage and heroic actions are celebrated by his people. A hero is someone willing to stand for others with courage, and one who does not allow fear to prevent them from helping others.
