Between the stories of Beowulf, Blackheart and The Deep, they all had one common thing. That thing is risk taking. From risking one 's life for another to risking one’s life for relationships. Beowulf risked his life for his men with every battle he fought. Emily risked her life to feel love from Blackheart. She also risked her life to feel love because of her failing relationships with her parents. And finally, Tom risked his life to give life to Ruby, but Ruby didn’t return the risk. Beowulf took many risks throughout his story, but one of the biggest was for his men. In Blackheart by Mark Brazatis, Emily risked her life to feel loved by someone. Her mother ditched Emily for Ed and they’d “drive off into the Uco Valley” (22-23), leaving the young girl by herself. Emily’s father had said “Emily’s presence would be inconvenient right now” (11-12). Hearing her father say this had made the young girl feel unloved. Seeking love, she turned to Blackheart. Emily begins to doubt the risk she’s about to take by releasing Blackheart, “Stop, she tells herself. Think,” (215). Emily second guessed herself. She wasn’t quite sure if she wanted to take the risk. Maybe gaining this sensation of love from a dangerous dog wasn’t worth it. She realized no one would be able to help her as Blackheart would attack them too, but if they did help her, she wouldn’t be able to see the dogs, Daniel or Maria anymore. But she decided that feeling love was a risk worth taking because she didn’t know when her parents would show her love again. “I’m safe. But--no--it is Blackheart, mouth at her ear, who is singing,” (264). Emily risked her life to bond with Blackheart.
