Most people have heard the myths and folklore of both Beowulf and Thor. The question that lies here is how well do we know them exactly? They come from different time periods which was the Viking Age for Thor and Old English for Beowulf. Thor was the God of lightning and wielded a powerful weapon called mjolnir which his father Odin or the all father gave him. Beowulf was a man who did not need weapons to fight his battles because of his immense strength. The myth of Thor was to explain how lightning was made, while Beowulf was a legend to entertain christian kings. Although they were diversified, they are pretty common and sort of interlace with each other, in a sense. A way that Thor and Beowulf are similar is they have to fight for their people and those fights were not easily won. Thor had to fight a race called Jotuns which were giants. The Jotuns were from a place called Jotunheim which meant land on giants. His “brother” was Loki and he was a Jotun that Odin, Thor’s father, took in and planned to try and use Loki as a connection to bring peace with the Jotuns one day. Loki found out and did not like that he was sheltered for he really was, which Loki’s real father was laufey who also lead the Jotuns. Beowulf killed the monster Grendel and Grendel’s mother and his rewards for those battles was to be a king. Then later in his life he fought a dragon and he won the fight with the dragon but he later died to an infection that the dragon caused by burning Beowulf. When Beowulf fought Grendel, Beowulf did not use weapons or armor because it would not seem fair for the monster.
