In the epic of Beowulf, we constantly see the battle between good and evil. In this epic the main protagonist Beowulf, and Grendel are the symbols for good and evil. Grendel is described as a evil monster from the start of the story. In the beginning of the passage the writer describes Grendel as a “powerful monster”, the author in the next couple lines of the passage goes off and starts describing the monster by saying " the monster stirred, that demon, that fiend, Grendel, ". (Lines 16- 17 Beowulf epic). Further on in the passage Grendel says he is a descendant from Cain, in the bible Cain was son of Abraham who killed his brother Abel and offered him as sacrifice. A strong example of a modern day Grendel to many people would be Adolf Hitler. Hitler was the leader of the Nazi group in Germany during World War 2. Just like Grendel, He Terrorized many people but mainly focused on terrorizing and killing the Jewish population. Adolf Hitler was born in Austria on April 20th, 1889; he rose to power in Germany after World War 1, and became the leader of the National Socialist German workers Party, but that party was also and most famously known as the Nazi party. After becoming chancellor of Germany, Hitler rose and took control of the army and prepared it for war. While preparing for war he started to target the people that weren’t full German. He started to ban marriages between non-Jewish and Jewish Germans. He passed laws that banned non-Aryans from the benefits of German citizenship. He also targeted children with mental and physical disabilities and later on authorized a law that also targeted disabled adults. In the Epic Poem Beowulf defeats both Grendel and his mother but fifty years later gets defeated by a fire breathing dragon. In this particular Epic we see Grendel as an evil monster, because he kills innocent people with no apparent reason, or at least that is what we are lead to believe. Even though there might not be solid evidence to the reason of his actions, there is analytical reasoning to his actions. Grendel, even though he has a monster like appearance and has monster like attributes,” I was Grendel, Ruiner of Mead halls, Wrecker of Kings! But also, as never before, I was alone.” (pg 80 Beowulf). Throughout the whole poem, he is trying to fighting for his acceptance into the society at the time, much like any human teenager now in days. Grendel’s action throughout the poem seems to be guided by his emotion and the eagerness to be accepted. Nevertheless his actions were evil; being the son of Satan himself is not the easiest thing. His evil mother since a young age drilled into his head to be evil. Even though he does not want to be evil, he lets his mother dictate what he became.
