An epic hero is a brave and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. Edward Bloom is a fantastic example of this in Big Fish, a Daniel Wallace novel. The book begins where Edward is dying. Through larger than life stories about his heroic journeys, he teaches his son about life.

However, in an epic poem, there is a particular type of hero portrayed; an epic hero. An epic hero is born of nobility, obtains superhuman capabilities, and embarks on some sort of journey. Beowulf is a story of the epic hero, Beowulf who is courageous, arrogant and endures a treacherous journey. The Odyssey written by Homer brings the reader on a perilous journey with Odysseus who is courageous and arrogant. Though Beowulf and Odysseus are both epic hero’s they share many similarities and many differences on their journeys.

Hero can be anyone, just have a good heart and courage to save or help the people around you. The task doesn’t have to be extraordinary but it can just be small simple act of nobility of character. Beowulf fit the standards as a classic hero, one who is near perfect, preforms extraordinary task, also his honor is worth more than his life, and dies in an unusual meaningful manner. There characteristics usually conclude being prideful, courageous and having sense of justice.
The definition of a true hero is very subjective as people have their own opinions on what makes someone a hero. Some people might consider someone who does the right thing a hero, for some it may be people who fight for their country. The characteristics of a hero might vary, but in the epic “Beowulf,” Beowulf is sought out to be the hero because of three main traits; his noble cause, code of honor, and his strength and courage. Each of these traits makes up the hero he is portrayed to be. One of the first qualities described in the epic is the act of a noble cause.

The poem is named after Beowulf who is a supernatural hero that slays any evil that crosses his path but is a real sweetheart when it comes to other people or the king. Various amounts of actions and words make a man more than just any being. A man more than himself has to be something bigger than life. That detail makes a hero, that detail makes a man more. In the eyes of children, and the public, a strong warrior must have heart. With this characteristic he can lift a mountain for anyone or thing in need.
He could send troops and let someone else deal with the dragon but he does not. He faces the dragon himself like a true hero would. Knowing an enemy this strong could kill him he fights regardless in order to protect his people. Beowulf killed the dragon and gave his life for his people truly the actions of a hero. Even as a king he has nothing to prove to anyone by facing the dragon, which shows that he does not fight for himself he fights because he believes he needs to.
