This is a great example of Beowulf's bravery. In this quote, he says that he has never known fear and has fought in many battles. Therefore, it shows that he isn’t concerned about whether he will live or die. He hears of trouble and eagerly goes to fight and stop it. To Emerson , someone that shows no signs of weakness , is brave , and has courage is a hero . Beowulf disgards his own safety to fight against the evil and for what is right . Fighting for others is a big part of being a hero . Beowulf is a indiviual that declares he can handily fight an infninite army of enemies.
In this poem, it talk about a warrior named Beowulf that leaves his home to go protect another kingdom. He heard about the chaos that was going on because of the monster named Grendel. He came to Hrothgar to fight and kill Grendel to seize the chaos. This then leads to him fighting Grendel’s mother who ends up killing. The question is, what makes beowulf an epic hero.
Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon epic that was told by scops, or story tellers, in the 6th century. The epic is about how Beowulf, a brave hero, fights evil monsters that are harming the people of Herot. Because Beowulf was written so long ago, specifically in medieval times, he is considered a hero. Some people would disagree that he is a true hero based on the reasons why he fights. Yet, no matter what motives are behind his actions, Beowulf is still a true hero because of his constant show of courage, combativeness, and loyalty.
Beowulf was a heroic figure in the epic poem “Beowulf”, but was he an Ideal epic hero? He slayed both Grendel and his mother, but was he lucky or powerful? There is evidence that he is an ideal hero: he willingly was ready to fight whatever was scaring the Danes, killing Grendel and his mother, and returning to give all he just earned to his king. There is also reasons he's not: his courage and pride has flaws and he got lucky in the fight against Grendel's mother.

In the beginning Beowulf born from an epic hero, shows Courage and bravery, as he is called upon by the King of Danes to kill the Demon Grendel. Grendel brutally kills the innocent, and helpless people for no other than the enjoyment of his time. Beowulf and Grendel finally meet and Beowulf kills Grendel, by Beowulf from extraordinary and courageously ripping out Grendel arm and then bleeds out and dies from loss of blood.
This is showing how even as he is dying he is still thinking about his people. Some would argue Beowulf isn’t smart and that his pride is in the way of him being a beneficial hero. Meaning it wasn’t smart of him to travel over the seas to fight a monster that he knows nothing about. Also, he thought he was the best of the best and that nobody can beat him. Although some people think that, other understand Beowulf was only thinking about what’s best for the people.

Beowulf’s willingness and sacrifice of himself to save others is why I must really say he is and epic hero. Some people could be heroes but still not have it in them to want to slay dragons and fight monster, But that was no challenge for Beowulf.

Although Beowulf displays all these qualities, there are several reasons he is not a hero, mainly him being egotistical and arrogant. This is why Beowulf is not a heroic person. Beowulf is often caught bragging about himself and his great accomplishments.

The boastful protagonist also displays the value of bravery by defeating foes, like Grendel, using his bare strength to take on foes by himself. In conclusion, Beowulf demonstrates the Anglo Saxon values of public reputation, and bravery in Anglo Saxon society.
Beowulf was believed to be the mightiest and most bravest off the hero's. In the poem it states, “ In his far-off home Beowulf, Higlac's follower and the strongest of the geats - greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world” (Pg. 3-4). When this is said Beowulf had already found out that grendel had killed 30 men in the Herot and is getting ready to gather his men and go kill Grendel. With this being said everyone in the poem believed that Beowulf was the ultimate leader, but grendel was the perfect monster.
