Yorkshire’s coastline is studded with dramatic headlands and beautiful bays. This walk links two of our most attractive coastal villages in an outing of two very distinct halves, the first passing through bird-filled woodland and the second a breezy tiptoe along the very rim of the county. RUNSWICK The village apparently takes its name from ‘Hild’s well’, a holy well in the grounds of St Hilda’s Church. According to legend, while returning to her monastery at Whitby, the Abbess Hilda stopped here, and after praying for water a spring appeared. Subsequently, St Hilda’s Well became a pilgrimage site for monks travelling between the religious houses of Kirkham and Whitby. In the early 1900s, eighty full-time fishing boats were putting out from Staithes. The port still has a few part-time fishermen, and it maintains a small fleet of traditional cobles. The distinctive shape of a coble is flat-bottomed with a high bow, and it possibly originates from a Viking design. The flat bottoms enabled boats to launch from and land onto shallow, sandy beaches. Moreover, fishing vessels required high bows to sail on the hazardous North Sea, especially when launching into the surf. The harbour nestles between the headlands of Cowbar Nab and Penny Nab with two long breakwaters to reduce the force of the waves and provide much-needed protection to the village. The Cod and Lobster Inn on the quayside has resisted the wrath of the North Sea for centuries, despite being destroyed by fierce storms and rebuilt on at least three occasions. The great storm of January 1953 washed away the front of the pub. Hopefully, the improved sea defences will prevent that from happening again. Before leaving the village take the time to explore its haphazard arrangement of alleys and ginnels, with curious names such as Gun Gutter, Slip Top and Dog Loup. The latter is the narrowest street in the UK, and at a mere 18 inches (457mm) in width, stouter walkers may have to shed a few pounds to pass through
