Beowulf Essay When you think of the concepts and explanation of a man and/or a hero what do you think of? Does bravery, courage, and honesty come to your head? In Beowulf: The Movie and the poem Beowulf, the themes both stick to the guidelines of Anglo Saxon culture and beliefs. Furthermore, the both define a hero in multiple ways. The Anglo Saxons were Germanic warriors of the United Kingdom, loyal to their cultural ways, beliefs, and kin. The poem of Beowulf was cultivated by his fellow warriors and kept alive to this day with the stories told. In comparison, Beowulf is recognized as a monster slayer, the strongest of all, greatest of the Geats, and hero of all, loyal to his Anglo Saxon culture. In the book Beowulf on page 36, stanza 109-116, it says, “ In his far off home, Beowulf, Higlac’s Follower and the strongest of the Geats-greater And stronger than anyone anywhere in this world-Heard how Grendel filled nights with horror And quickly commanded a boat fitted out, Proclaiming that he’d go to that famous king, Would sail across the sea to Hrothgar, Now when help was needed.” This explains how determined and confident Beowulf was of him and his men. Although, in contrast, in the poem, Beowulf stuck to his Anglo Saxon belief and culture and had no intention in breaking his ways. He slays Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a dragon. Yet, in the movie, Beowulf can be seen being seduced by Grendel’s mother, leading to Beowulf lying about Grendel’s mother’s death, which leads to the dragon that Beowulf slays, being his son.
