Taking a Stand In the epic, “From Beowulf” translated by Burton Raffel, a warrior from the Geats comes to rescue Hrothgar, the king of the Danes whose land is being attacked by a monster, Grendel. Beowulf succeeds and defeats Grendel. Sometimes, it isn’t the winning, but it’s the taking a stand that counts. Taking a stand is more important because you are standing up for what you believe in. When you take a stand for what you believe in, it shows bravery. Bravery is the action of being courageous. If you are standing up for what you believe in, you are already winning. “Often, for undaunted courage, fate spares the man it has not already marked." Beowulf was determined to kill Grendel, whether it was with a weapon or just bear hands. He knew that it wasn’t going to be easy, but he continued to show his courage by going through with the fight. Determination plays a big part in taking a stand. Having determination when taking a stand shows what kind of person someone is. "The fact is, Unferth, if you were truly as keen and courageous as you claim to be Grendel would never have got away with such unchecked atrocity, attacks on your king, havoc in Heorot and horrors everywhere." (Raffel. 590-594) On the other hand, some people say, winning counts more. This point of view makes sense because they are the one with the victory. However, taking a stand counts more because you put in effort and you stood up for what you believed in and doing what you believe is truly right. Therefore, taking a stand counts more. In conclusion, taking a stand is more important. It shows bravery, courage, and determination. Although, there are arguments debating whether it’s more important to win, but it’s more important to take a stand because it’s defending someone’s feelings even though it might cause a
