Epic heroes have been written about in literature for as long as there was writing. An epic hero must have superhuman qualities to enhance their character. Epic heroes usually show some relations towards a god or gods in their story. Epic heroes comes across many temptations and embark on a trip into the underworld. Epic heroes follow a certain archetype in literature that follows their adventures and Beowulf is no exception. Beowulf fits the description of having superhuman abilities in many different ways. He is extremely strong and powerful in the book, and his strength is showcased in his fight with Grendel. Beowulf is also courageous, he was willing to take up a fight that nobody else dared to. Beowulf also possesses advanced oratory skill, he often is able to persuade people to bend to his will and aid him in his travels, as seen with the border guards early in the story. Beowulf’s thrilling fight with Grendel’s mother a perfect example of this typical progression. Beowulf swims under water, and dives deep down into darkness to battle with Grendel’s mother. Beowulf is only saved from his dark descent under water, which is symbolic of a trip into the underworld, from a bright, shining sword found under water. Beowulf uses its majestic power, which could be seen as religion, God, or Jesus, and is finally able to defeat the demon. Beowulf’s actions throughout the poem prove repeatedly how he is an epic hero. Beowulf’s larger than life qualities and abilities allow him success numerous times throughout his journey. God plays a large role in Beowulf’s journey through subtle references throughout. On the opposite end of the religious spectrum, demons, the underworld, and hell are all prevalent in Beowulf’s trials throughout the poem.
