The Last Battle is represented in our art piece. It is of Beowulf consumed in flames and in need of Wiglaf’s help. The drawing shows the climax of the story Beowulf and how it is the final turning point for Beowulf and Wiglaf. Fraternity is also seen in the art piece, it is shown through Wiglaf stood strong by his leader’s side till the end. The story lives on through the close bond between the men of the tribe and loyalty to the king. Our art piece portrays Beowulf struggle, Wiglaf’s struggle, and Beowulf’s example of loyalty being passed down. The picture depicts the thrilling climax of Beowulf. The drawing displays Beowulf struggling against the robust dragon while Wiglaf is standing in the sidelines, contemplating whether he should help or not. The climax is described as the turning point in the plot or high point of an action. For example, fraternity shows the loyalty within Anglo Saxon culture. In our art piece, Beowulf is consumed in the flames from a vigorous dragon. Out of all of his “brave and noble” followers, there was only one who remains loyal (Raffel 709). Wiglaf “... could see how his king was suffering, burning … Wiglaf’s mind was made up; he raised his yellow shield and drew his sword” (Raffel 717-22). Wiglaf stays faithful to Beowulf, Herot, and his tribe. He recognizes all the influential actions his leader did for him, along with the many gifts Beowulf gave him. This presents the powerful bond of brotherhood between them, fraternity. Wiglaf could have easily fled from the scene with the rest of the warriors, but he stays as Beowulf’s most devoted soldier.
