Beowulf vs. Achilles Beowulf is an epic poem written by an unknown author in 1000 AD but based in 500 AD. The main character, Beowulf, is an Anglo-Saxon who loves glory. The Iliad, also an epic poem, written by Homer in 1200 BC related to the events of the Trojan War. The main character, Achilles, is a greek warrior with anger issues and strong determination. While both Beowulf and Achilles have many similar characteristics as well as differences, they lived in two different time periods and still represent their respective cultures very well. A few of the characteristics Beowulf and Achilles have in common are that they’re both brave, honorable and courageous. Beowulf explains that Grendel doesn’t need weapons nor does he fear them, so he won’t use weapons either. To go into battle against Grendel, a powerful monster, with no weapons shows just how brave, courageous and honorable Beowulf is. Achilles also shows these characteristics when he says, “Likewise with me, if destiny like his/ awaits me, I shall rest when I have fallen” (62-63). Achilles is brave and courageous enough to go off and kill Hector for his best friend, whom Hector murdered. While both Beowulf and Achilles killed, they killed for opposite reasons. Beowulf killed for fame and glory. It was said in the poem, “But Beowulf/ Longed only for fame, leaped back/ Into battle” (485-487). Beowulf killed Grendel, Grendels mother, and the dragon for the glory and fame that it gave. Anglo-Saxons were loyal but were hungry for glory. By killing monsters to protect the Danes he died glorious and famous. Achilles killed to avenge his bestfriend’s death. After Achilles slit Hectors throat, Achilles asks Hector if he thought he could get away with killing Patroclus, then Hector dies. Achilles felt the need to get revenge for Patroclus. And so he
