To begin the novel, George Orwell expresses his main character's distaste of the people around him. It is narrated that, “Winston’s hatred was not turned against Goldstein at all, but, on the contrary, against Big Brother, the Party, and the Thought Police” (Orwell 15). Orwell's choice to write about Winston's disdain for the party foreshadows Winston's character because of how his hatred was turned against the Party, Big Brother, and the Thought Police. In To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, it is very clear that the main character, Scout, sees no point of going to school and does not approve of her teacher, Miss Caroline. One quote that supports this opinion is, "If I didn't have to stay I'd leave. Jem that damn lady says Atticus' been teaching me and for him to stop it-"(Lee 23). This quote shows how Scout does not approve of her teacher and feels like she should not be going to school. I feel like, as the years go on, that Scout will start to enjoy school more and see the importance of it.
