What is the american dream? To F. Scott Fitzgerald it is love, money, and social status. The Great Gatsby, “Winter Dreams”, “Bernice Bobs Her Hair” they all have love, money, and social status in common.
Social status is a big in the 1920s and still is today. In “Bernice Bobs Her Hair” social status plays a big role in this story. Bernice a boring, socially awkward girl wants to be just like her cousin Marjorie (who is a flapper). So her cousin Marjorie changes the way of the young victorian looking lady into a flapper so she’ll be accepted. Another part of the american dream is money we see that in “Winter Dream”
The rich get richer while the poor get poorer. In Fitzgerald’s “Winter Dream” a man named Dexter meets a young Judy Jones who is a young rich girl at the time. They meet on a golf course where dexter is there cady and dexter instantly falls in love with her. So dexter leaves the cady job and opens up a dryer shop and becomes rich so she’ll notice him. Then uses the money to impress Judy he successfully does so. Sadly

Mr. Jame Gatz also known as Jay Gatsby almost lived by. He started off as poor farm boy later meet a rich man named Dan Cody and when Dan mysteriously died from his girlfriend Jay was cheated out of money Jay joined the war. Before he was deployed for war he met a young Daisy and they both instantly fell in love with each other. Only problem was that Gatsby was poor and Daisy got tired of waiting and her mother wouldn't allow it. So Gatsby after the war and found out Daisy was married moved to New York where she lived and was right across the bay from them. The way he made his fortune was bootlegging which the setting of the story was in the height of Prohibition so he became instantly rich and through massive parties hoping that Daisy would come over. That man done all of that hoping Daisy would notice and he eventually does see him and they instantly fall in love
